Why should you consider investing in property in Spain?

Spain is a lifestyle. Associated with sunshine, delicious cuisine and parties until the early hours of the morning, it actually has much more to offer, with local culture and attitudes to life at the forefront. It’s no wonder that the eyes and wallets of both tourists and those looking for property, whether as an investment or for their second home, turn towards it. Today we look at why it is worth living in Spain. If only for a while.

Let’s start with a few facts. Located mainly on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and smaller islands and areas in northern Africa. It consists of 17 autonomous regions and two autonomous cities, with a total population of approximately 47.4 million, of which 5.4 million are foreigners (data per ine.es/’21). The country’s capital and largest city is Madrid. Among the reasons to be interested in buying a property in Spain are the year-round sunny weather, especially on the coast and the islands, the varied landscapes, the Mediterranean cuisine, which can be talked about (and tasted) for hours, and what binds and encapsulates all these elements: the serenity of the Spanish people with their love of celebrating the moment and making the most of life. Want to know more? Then let’s get to know Spain a little closer.

Mild climate and Spanish sunshine The climate in Spain is said to be one of the best in Europe. The weather depends on the region, although 80% of the country is dominated by the so-called Mediterranean climate, which is characterised by mild winters with pleasant temperatures and no frost and long, hot summers. The further south you go, the hotter and drier it gets. This is particularly unique to the coast, which advertises 320 sunny days a year, or the Canary Islands, which have a subtropical climate with little difference in temperature between the months. It is no wonder then that it is regions such as the Costa Blanca or the Costa del Sol that are of enduring interest to potential property investors in Spain. On the coast, you can count on 25-31 degrees between June and August and around 12-14 in the coldest month of January. Coastal areas also differ in terms of humidity. A drier, yet health-friendly climate awaits you on the Costa del Sol.

A landscape to feast your eyes on

Spain is famous for its breathtaking landscapes. It is a land of contrasts. Although to the average observer it is primarily associated with water and the coast, it is an extremely mountainous country with a vast central plateau. The fact that it is the area with the largest number of UNESCO biosphere reserves in the world is testament to its incredible natural diversity. Thus, on Spanish territory you will find, for example, a green laurel forest in the Garajonay National Park and a desert in the Bardenas Reales Protected Landscape Area. This natural diversity means that each region will delight you with something special and offer a unique way to spend your time. For example, the combination of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea on the Costa del Sol, the picturesque bays and rocky promontories of the Costa Blanca, as well as the vineyards and olive groves of the country’s central areas await travellers, tourists and lucky property owners in Spain. You can sip on Spain’s landscapes over and over again and never get enough.

Cuisine in Spain

Cuisine is an area where Spain definitely scores. Again, this is where local diversity creeps in. In the coastal regions of Andalusia, for example, you’ll usually find fish, seafood (you can choose from such marine gifts as cod, prawns, moules, octopus) and vegetables on your plates, all sprinkled with nutrient-rich olive oil. Recall that Mediterranean cuisine itself is considered the healthiest in the world. Central Spain, far from the coast, has a wealth of braised and roasted meats. To the east, Valencia is a region where rice dishes, such as the famous paella valenciana, are king. Other Spanish classics include gazpacho, a traditional tomato and pepper cooler; jamon iberio or smoked Spanish ham, considered a high-end luxury product by the Spanish; the aforementioned rice-based dish paella and the Spanish tortilla, a thick egg omelette with potatoes.

Property owners in Spain will also fall in love with tapas culture, i.e. wandering from bar to bar and sampling small delights, among which are olives, padron peppers, fried seafood, potato tortillas or patatas bravas, all preferably accompanied by Spanish wine. The latter will delight you with its variety. Spain ranks 3rd in the European Union in terms of the amount of wine produced. It is by far the country’s most popular beverage. The most famous is rioja wine, often called tinto fino, which is a long-aged wine in oak barrels. Also gaining in popularity is cava, or Spanish sparkling wine, the equivalent of Italian prosecco. And if you come across a wine whose quality leaves a lot to be desired, you can dilute it with colourless orangeade and create the popular tinto de verano. We like this approach!

A rich history visible at every turn

Spain is a country where you cannot get bored. The area’s undeniably rich history means that a whiff of the past can be felt at every turn. The cultural heritage of present-day Spain includes the Christian, Judaic and Arab legacies. The Roman conquest of the peninsula (3rd – 1st century BC) left a lasting mark on the local culture. Spain is therefore a real treat for culture lovers. Here you will find as many as 44 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the 3rd largest in Europe)! Spain will offer you the opportunity to explore its history from prehistoric cave art and Roman remains to modernist architectural wonders. Among the World Heritage sites of great popularity are the enormous palace complex of the Muslim Nasrid dynasty – the Alhambra in Granada, the residence of the rulers (first Arab, then Christian) of the Alcazar in Seville, the Sagrada Família church in Barcelona or the Altamira Cave with its prehistoric paintings. For lovers of greenery, on the other hand, there are national parks, including the Palm Grove in Elche in the Costa Blanca region.

Spain is a lifestyle! The weather or the beauty and diversity of nature, these are the qualities of Spain that you will see with the naked eye. Equally important, however, is what Spaniards carry in their hearts and what they show in the way they live. Admittedly, the daily siesta is more myth than reality, but the fact is that the average Spaniard approaches life in a “slow” spirit. So when in this country, we slow down, focus on the present moment, enjoy life and, above all, celebrate. Spaniards attach great importance to cultivating relationships, with communal feasting at the forefront. They have a reputation for being open, laughing and easy-going people. It is this openness, with communal meals and hours of conversation, that is part of the Spanish culture that will give you, as a Spanish property owner, the chance to not only feel like you are among your own, but to fall in love and adopt some of these customs. To this approach we say “¡Hola!” which means “hello” in Spanish.

And what is life like in Spain?

In addition to the above-discussed benefits of living in Spain, the affordable cost of living is also mentioned, as is the favourable law for foreigners, which makes it possible, for example, to obtain a loan to purchase a property in Spain. In terms of cost of living, foreigners living here emphasise that, contrary to appearances, this is a country that differs from the standard perception of the euro area. Indeed, the presence of the European currency does not always translate into high prices in shops; in many regions, they are similar to those in Poland. Among Spanish cities, Malaga on the Costa del Sol received high marks from foreigners. In 2021, it was named the 2nd best city for expats to live in by InterNations, behind only Kuala Lumpur. Its place on the podium was secured by its climate and leisure activities. The estimated monthly cost of living for one person (excluding rent), according to the portal (livingcost.org), is € 534. It is worth mentioning that Madrid also made it into the top ten.

The moderate cost of living, as well as the high standard of living, also makes Spain high on the list of countries to live… in retirement. It owes this, among other things, to its high standard of healthcare. According to the World Health Organisation, Spain’s healthcare system is one of the best in the entire world. Add to this the lower price of medicines and free health services for retirees (in most cases). If you are considering a property investment in Spain specifically for your own retirement, then in our opinion all the arguments speak in favour of yes.

Where to live in Spain?

According to data from the Association of Spanish Notaries, the most popular regions when it comes to buying property in Spain in 2021 were the Autonomous Community of Valencia (26%), Andalusia (20%) and Catalonia (16%). Among these, the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol were of particular interest to potential buyers. If you are interested in a house or flat in Spain, these are the places to start your investment journey. We will take it with you. So let’s check out what these 2 coastal areas will offer you:

Costa Blanca This tourist region in the province of Alicante in the Autonomous Community of Valencia is impossible not to love. The White Coast owes its name to the colour of the sand of the local beaches stretching over 250 km in length, as well as the white flowers of the almond tree that grows here and the whitewashed walls of the houses. It appeals to the imagination, doesn’t it? It’s worth knowing that the Costa Blanca is one of the most popular destinations for foreign tourists and investors, whether looking for a place for their second home or an opportunity to place their finances. Among the reasons for this unflagging interest, the attractiveness of the region and economic considerations are cited in equal measure. In terms of the former, the Costa Blanca will offer you a picturesque terrain, a year-round temperate climate with 320 days of sunshine a year, a warm sea, hot summers and temperature-friendly winters. That’s not all. Further arguments in favour are the high standard of living, with Mediterranean cuisine, a high level of security and affordable prices included. It is best, after all, to see for yourself. The Costa Blanca is a very well-connected region. You can fly here with low-cost airlines from Poland landing at Alicante-Elche airport, located just 8 km from the regional capital Alicante. The economic arguments include, above all, the attractive prices of properties on the Costa Blanca and the possibility of making money from them through tourist rentals.

The Costa del Sol The very name – Sunshine Coast – shows what we can expect. Situated in Andalusia in southern Spain, this region, like the Costa Blanca, attracts tourists and investors with its hot summer season with temperatures reaching 30 degrees and warm winters. Unlike the White Coast, the climate here is drier and the breeze blowing in from the ocean makes the perceived temperatures less oppressive. The microclimate here is said to have a health-promoting effect, especially for those suffering from respiratory illnesses. Also on the list of advantages of the Sunshine Coast is the terrain. It is a land of contrasts. The lucky buyers of a property on the Costa del Sol will get included access to both the 400 km of Mediterranean coastline and its 140 beaches, as well as the mountains. What does this mean? The opportunity to spend time by both the sea and enjoy the mountain climate in one. Let’s go further. On the list of undoubted advantages of the region you will find the delicious Andalusian cuisine, rich in fish, seafood and vegetables, or the convenient international connections to and from Malaga airport. And then there is something else. The aura of prestige and luxury that the Costa del Sol has worked for since the mid-20th century. For it is here that celebrities from all over the world have built their homes, it is here that there is the greatest concentration of golf courses in Europe and it is here that you will find one of the most expensive ports in the world. For some reason, it is on the Costa del Sol that most foreigners live.
