In Carrer Marlet there is a tombstone that speaks of a donation made by Rabbi Xemuel ha-Sardí to the old hospital of El Call. Apart from this mention, the people of Barcelona know little about this rabbi Undoubtedly, the character to whom this tombstone refers, which permanently reminds us of the existence of a pious foundation, remains an enigma for most pedestrians who cross Carrer Marlet, in the middle of what was the Judiciary of Barcelona.
Born around 1190 , Xemuel ha-Sardí was a wealthy man, who inherited land and heritage. Certainly, given its richness, it was possible to allow the construction or sponsorship of the alms pyre referred to in the tombstone of Carrer Marlet of which we spoke suara, which contains the following text: ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ , translated by’ Fundació pia de rabí Xemuel ha-Sardí ‘, its light burns permanently . This is the translation that appears on a plaque under the tombstone, although the last three letters form an acrostic it is still a matter of discussion among specialists as it offers various possibilities for interpretation.
