HISTORY OF WARSAW BREWERIES

Warsaw Breweries is a place with a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century, which has undergone a fascinating transformation over the years. Today, thanks to a careful revitalization, it represents a harmonious blend of industrial heritage and contemporary urban architecture.

The story of Warsaw Breweries begins in 1846 when Błażej Haberbusch, Konstanty Schiele, and Henryk Klawe purchased a property at 59 Krochmalna Street from the Bank of Poland. They established a brewery on the site, which eventually became one of the largest in the Kingdom of Poland, second only to the breweries in Tychy and Okocim. In 1898, the enterprise was transformed into the Joint-Stock Company of the Steam Brewery and Artificial Ice Factory under the name Haberbusch and Schiele, with a share capital of 1.5 million rubles. In the interwar period, the brewery continued to expand, exporting its products to Ukraine and Russia and introducing new beer varieties such as Pilsner, Kulmbacher, and Bavarian styles.

During World War II, Warsaw Breweries played a key role in underground resistance efforts. Weapons and ammunition for the Warsaw Uprising were stored on its premises. The brewery’s owners actively supported the Home Army soldiers by issuing false employment certificates to shield them from persecution. Moreover, the buildings provided shelter for civilians being pursued by the Gestapo.

After the war, in 1948, the brewery was nationalized and renamed Warsaw Brewing Plants. Production resumed for popular Polish beer brands like “Królewskie,” “Specjal,” and “Porter.” In 1972, the brewery also became the first site in Poland to produce Coca-Cola under American license.

In 2004, beer production at the site ceased, and the area fell into disuse. That changed in 2016, when an ambitious revitalization project was launched. On the 4.4-hectare site, a modern complex was developed, featuring three office buildings, five residential buildings, and restored historic facilities such as the Brewhouse, Lager Cellars, the Brewer’s Villa, and the Laboratory.

The revitalization project of Warsaw Breweries received international recognition, winning the prestigious MAPIC Award for Best Urban Regeneration in 2022. The jury praised the development for its seamless integration with the city, sustainable design solutions, and innovative approach.

Today, Warsaw Breweries is a vibrant hub, combining residential, office, and recreational functions. The preserved historical elements are a powerful reminder of the site’s past, giving the area a unique atmosphere that attracts both Warsaw residents and visitors alike.
