Northern Śródmieście is bordered by three major avenues—Jerozolimskie, Jana Pawła II, and Solidarności—and by the Vistula escarpment to the east. It is the most representative area of the city, centered around Warsaw’s tallest building, the Palace of Culture and Science. This is where the capital’s tourist and business center is located. History, however, has not been kind to this area: during World War II, virtually all of its buildings, many of them dating back to the Art Nouveau period, were destroyed. Today, the reconstruction of the historic architectural fabric continues, but the main emphasis is on the construction of modern skyscrapers that have become a symbol of Warsaw.
