Aniołki is a small district with a terraced spatial layout, whose nice name refers to the no longer existing church and hospital complex of All God’s Angels. The local hills used to defend access to the city, serving as a fortification.
The development of the district was conditioned by the creation of the lime tree Wielka Aleja (today, Zwycięstwa Lane, the oldest four-row downtown avenue in Poland) in the 18th century, along which the first tram lines were laid in the next century – initially for horse-drawn trams, then electric ones. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city hospital Städtisches Krankenhaus Danzig-Langfuhr (today the Medical University of Gdańsk) was put into use, the creation of which significantly increased the value of the district.
Aniołki became famous in history for two interesting events.
The first one took place in a café known and liked by the inhabitants of the city Café Halbe Allee, located in the middle of the Great Avenue, where the first public electric lighting show took place at the end of the 19th century. The idea of the owner of the premises brought huge crowds to the café. In 2021, the destroyed building is to regain its former glory.
The event in 1890 was connected with the construction of the Schichau Shipyard (Schichau-Werft Danzig). The swampy area for the investment required the fertilization of a huge amount of sand and stones. Therefore, it was decided to use the land from the nearby Wronie Wzgórze (today in the Aniołki district). For this purpose, a funicular almost half a kilometer long was built and the material was transported by special carriages over Wielka Aleja and railway tracks to the site of the future shipyard. Currently, Wronia Górka is one of the most charming places in Gdańsk. Characteristic wide stairs from Wronia street (newly renovated) lead to the vantage point with a stunning panorama of the shipyard cranes, the Vistula River, the waters of the Gdańsk Bay or the “amber” football stadium.
Aniołki is a district with a typically residential character and remarkably diverse buildings. The lower part consists of villa buildings, often combined with health care services, and the upper terrace is made up of social housing estates with a historical origin and contemporary development projects, combined with a service function. There are no large investment areas here, the development of the residential function is possible thanks to the creation of small housing complexes.
A housing estate on the Focha Hill is an implementation of modern construction, appreciated by the inhabitants of Gdańsk. Only a few-story buildings, picturesquely situated among greenery, often overlooking the panorama of Gdańsk and surrounded by tourist routes, allow for a comfortable, peaceful life. At the same time, the short distance from the center of Śródmieście (approx. 2 km) provides easy access to cultural life, numerous restaurants, and trade points.
Carefully designed greenery, street furniture and playgrounds for children please the eyes of the most demanding residents. Local shops and service establishments have been created in the neighborhood streets, and larger shopping, after a few minutes’ walk, is possible in the shopping center of the neighboring Suchanino district.
There is a tennis court, a multi-functional sports field and a fitness room waiting for active residents.
The eastern part of the Aniołki district consists of former cemeteries, transformed into extensive parks in the 20th century.
Zwycięstwa Lane running through the district, the main communication route connecting the center of Gdańsk with Gdynia; facilities of the Medical University of Gdańsk; The Bałtycka Opera; border railway tracks with a stop of Szybka Kolej Miejska and Zebrań Ludowych Square constitute the supralocal importance of the district.
Aniołki are surrounded by five neighborhoods:
Wrzeszcz Górny with numerous schools and a wide range of service and commercial facilities as well as the housing estate … Diabełkowo.
Suchanino with a predominant residential and service function.
Siedlce with a varied topography as well as service and medical facilities.
Śródmieście with the historic and most representative parts of the city.
Młyniska with industrial and shipyard areas.
Recreational areas:
Aniołki district stands out on the map of Gdańsk with relatively large green quarters, mainly due to forested hills, with the most famous and popular Wronia Góra, rich in forest and park alleys. In the area, you can meet cyclists and Nordic walking enthusiasts, as well as families with children and seniors enjoying the charms of living in a green area. The lower terrace of the district is occupied by Steffensów Park – one of the largest and oldest public parks in Gdańsk. The bicycle path leading along it is one of the most popular.
Aniołki is also the Academic Sports Center of the Gdańsk University of Technology (with a swimming pool) and the Sports Center of the Medical University of Gdańsk, the Gdańsk Sports Center with a football and rugby stadium, and in winter Zebrań Ludowych Square houses an indoor city ice rink.
Communication:
Aniołki is a perfectly communicated part of the city. In the lower part of the district, residents are served by trams and buses, Fast City Rail (SKM) (connection with Sopot and Gdynia), and along Zwycięstwa Lane – a bicycle road. The upper terrace has numerous buses that allow you to quickly travel to the neighboring districts.
