ABOUT THE TENEMENT HOUSE:
“Reich and Birnbaum permanently lived in Warsaw, and ordered the design of their tenement house from an architect from Krakow – engineer arch. Edward Fuhrschmied. The construction was completed in 1936. The plot on which this facility was built was located in an exposed place, because a city square with a town hall was to be built next to it. The building itself was a corner, four-story “Gdynia luxury”, where on the ground floor there was gate passage and shops. As Mrs. Maria Sołtysik (an expert in Gdynia architecture) wrote: “The design was based on a traditional two- and three-bay load-bearing structure, with an internal skylight. On each floor there were three large apartments, all with a representative hall and a separate utility and sanitary area. In addition, the largest of the apartments had a wide open hall to the dining room (connected by an enfilade with the living room) and a study. A novelty in Gdynia’s architecture, which was used here for the first time, was the corner winter garden. The tenement house was designed in the spirit of late functionalism with cubic forms, combined with the “luxury trend”. A rectangular, glazed corner is visible, which initiated this motif in the city. “The decoration of the side parts of both facades is striped-textured, with group windows framed by strips of convex plaster, a shade darker than the whole, maintained in a light tone”. In order to distinguish itself from the rest of the building, the ground floor was lined with a rusticated, dark plaster made of artificial stone (terrabon type). Mica was added to the plaster on the elevation, and thanks to this treatment, the facade shines on sunny days. The staircase has a staircase with soul, as well as original elements of multi-colored terrazzo. On the roof, you can see a pre-war flagpole. The house was inhabited by the elite of Gdynia’s business. These people met on Saturday afternoons in the yard, at the back of their place of residence, where they read Jewish literature and listened to music on a gramophone.”

The tenement house was a luxury building in keeping with the times, equipped with the following installations: electricity, water, sewage, gas and central heating, and also had an elevator. On the ground floor there were shops and a driveway gate.
To this day, the most valuable original elements of the tenement house have been preserved – the composition and decoration of the facade and the decoration of the staircase. The entry made in 2009 in the Register of Immovable Monuments of the Pomeranian Voivodeship was made at the initiative of the residents of the tenement house, who took great care of the building for years.

However, woonerf does not completely exclude vehicular traffic from the street.
Cafes, restaurants, pubs, shops, florists, artists’ studios and galleries, a market hall are everyday life. It is a lifestyle. The location in the very center and walking distance from the Gdynia beach allow you to fully enjoy the proximity of the sea and the vibrant life of Śródmieście.
