The area of the village of Casal de Barbas, where the condominium is located, is part of the Linhas de Torres Vedras to the north of Lisbon. These are a set of 152 fortifications and other defensive works, built between 1809 and 1812, located on the Lisbon Peninsula.

In the context of the Peninsular War, they were designed with the purpose of preventing an invading army from reaching the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal or, in the event of a defeat, to allow the safe embarkation of the British Army in retreat.
